Ability Types

Triggered Ability. Indicates an ability that happens after the trigger. If it only triggers once, use "when". If it can be triggered multiple times, use "whenever". If it triggers at a certain time in the turn order, use "at".

Activated Ability. Made up of a cost and an effect, with a colon (:) separating them. Separate parts of a cost (mana, tap symbols, etc.) with commas.

Replacement Effect. Indicates that an effect does not occur, and is replaced with someting else. Commonly begins with "if", and ends with "instead". Regeneration is a replacement effect, as is "This creature enters the battlefield with/as..."

Permanents, Spells, and Cards

A card is a creature only when it is on the battlefield. Murder cannot destroy a creature in an opponent's hand.

A card is a spell only when it is on the stack. Essence Scatter cannot counter a creature that is already on the battlefield.

A card is a card everywhere else - in hand, in a library, in the graveyard, or in exile.

This is true of all card types - refer to the type itself only when referencing things on the battlefield.

Damage Sources

Damage always requires a source - in the case of direct damage spells, refer to the card name itself. Lightning Bolt would not work if it said "Target creature or player takes 3 damage."

MSE Shortcuts

Use CARDNAME to keep a card name consistent, and LEGENDNAME to exclude everything after a comma.

Use two colons :: to creature a bullet point, and two dashes -- to create an em dash.

You can toggle a symbol by highlighting it and pressing CTRL + M.
